“The Holdovers” is a 2023 Christmas comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne. The film is set in the early 1970s at a New England prep school and follows a cranky history teacher, Paul Hunham (played by Paul Giamatti), who is forced to stay on campus over the holidays to supervise a group of students who have nowhere to go. Among them is a troubled student named Angus (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s grieving cook, Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who recently lost her son in the Vietnam War.
As they spend the holiday together, these three unlikely companions form a bond, learning from each other and finding unexpected friendship and support. The film is both heartwarming and humorous, exploring themes of loneliness, connection, and the impact of unexpected relationships.
