Showing Friday 31st May at 7:30pm at The Old Girls’ School Community Centre: A Month in the Country. Special showing to coincide with Local and Community History Month which takes place every May in the United Kingdom. Organized by the Historical Association, this month-long celebration aims to increase awareness of local history, promote history in general to the local community, and encourage community members to participate.
“A Month in the Country” is a British film released in 1987, directed by Pat O’Connor. The film is based on the 1980 novel of the same name by J.L. Carr. Here’s a brief overview:
- Plot Summary: The story is set in the summer of 1920 in rural Yorkshire, England. Tom Birkin (played by Colin Firth), a World War I veteran, arrives in the village of Oxgodby to restore a medieval mural in the local church. As he works on the mural, he becomes entangled in the lives of the villagers and forms a bond with another war-damaged soul, Moon (played by Kenneth Branagh). The film explores themes of healing, love, and the passage of time.
